On Battleship & Avengers

Interesting experience this past weekend. Went with friends to double feature alien invasion, back to back 'Avengers' and 'Battleship'. I'm obviously in the minority, but Battleship was tenser, more realistic, and I thought the aliens were pretty scary. That spinning disk is incredible VFX work that must have taken a year to put together. How about that battleship curving into water at the last second.

I liked 'Avengers', but feel it represents a younger generation's retreat from believing they can do anything about the dire world situation to comic book nostalgia for superheroes who will save the day. 'Battleship' however depends on human beings collectivizing their efforts (in this case through military) and solving their problems. Yes, there was some cheez balls lines and a dose of super-patriotism, but like 'Independence Day”, the six of us walked out of the theater happy that the world had survived another day.
